Perkins Student Loan Program is a Federally Subsidized Program

The Perkins student loan is a loan which is made out to the student that must be paid back under specific terms which are normally very good such as a very low fixed interest for the student loan rate. The current student loan interest rate is not the only factor to consider when applying for the Federal Perkins Loan. You must be aware of other charges to the loan as well. This program is similar to other federal student loan programs in that it's done on a first come first serve basis. Participating universities are only allowed so much monies from the government on Federal Perkins loans. Once the school allocates there monies out; it's gone and there is no more to be given in that school year. Apply early! Fill out a student loan application ASAP!!! You have up to ten years to pay back a Perkins student loan but if you attend school part time or are in the military or drop out below part time then your terms to pay back the Perkins loans changes to nine years. There is a nice caveat of the Perkins loan; it can be forgiven for the following reasons:

1. Graduates who work in certain specific law enforcement jobs.
2. Military service which is considered hostile areas.
3. Employed in certain designated public or nonprofit family service positions. 
4. Employed in specified teaching positions.
